I know I haven't posted for over 6 months, but I just wanted to jot this down before I forget. (And hopefully I will re-enter the blogging world now that school has started)
So, Luke started 2nd grade last week. A few nights ago, he was telling me that the boy he sits next to is "kinda weird". I asked hime "why". He said that he doesn't really listen to directions, jumps out of his chair alot, yells the answers out loud, but is really smart. I didn't really say much b/c I didn't know the whole story and wasn't sure if Luke was just complaining for no reason. The next day, I was talking to one of the other moms in the class and asked her if she knew anything about this boy. (She was the PTA president and I work with her a little) Well come to find out, she knew this boy very well and is friends with his mom. She said that this boy "Jason", has Autism. She explained that he is very smart but can't control alot of what he does. She also suggested some ways for Luke to make friends with him.
When we got home from school, Luke and I had a big talk about Autism and what it is. I tried to explain to him from what I knew(which isn't much). But all in all, I just told Luke to try to be nice to him but that in a few weeks they will have different assigned seats.(Really, how dumb am I)
Well tonight, at dinner, Luke begin to tell me about his day. He told me about his spelling words they have and how much he doesn't like homework and so forth. Then he went on to say that at lunch today, he saw that Jason was sitting by himself. So, he went over to him and sat down and then asked him some questions(apparently this kid knows all the capitols of every state and country and all kinds of flowers). So Luke said he had to ask his name 3-4 times before Jason would even look at him. Finally Luke said "what is the capitol of China?" Jason replied, "Hong Kong." Then he said what about Australia, and England and so forth. Everytime Jason answered him. He said "Mom, he finally talked to me!" Then, what was the best part was when Luke said. "Mom, I felt such a warm feeling in my heart all day". He went on to say "I just felt so Happy!"
Luke, I just feel so happy that you are my son.
Love,
Your biggest fan
Mom

Oh, oh, oh! What a sweetheart. And you are a GREAT mom to have had that talk with him and to have encouraged him to make friends with the boy. Understanding and unconditional love are such important traits to have. What a good boy he is!
And you left such nice words on my blog. I certainly am not the most selfless person I know. But I will do my best to live up to your thoughts of me! I LOVE YOU!!!!! Now I am off to try to figure out tomorrow's school schedule!
What a sweet wonderful boy you have! You are such a wonderful mom!
how sweet....I am glad that he was put into the life of this little boy....they have so many challenges and maybe Luke is just what they both need....and you can remember how lucky you are to have children with less challenges....I see this kind of behavior more times then not...and one of my good friends has a child who is highly authistic...she is so patient and loving.
Wow, Luke is growing up so fast. He's so cute and really caring.
I love that story. And I love you took time to post it!
Oh Ronna, that brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for sharing.
